November, 2003 - Two Steps Forward?
I received a delivery at work today
- the man handed me a portable screen with a stylus to record my
signature. No muss, no fuss and he was off. We have entered the
age of paperless technology, but I don't necessarily equate that
with progress. At the dawn of civilization, Man scratched the surface
of moist clay tablets with a stick or tools fashioned out of bone.
Early Egyptians used reed brushes dipped in ink to write on papyrus
scrolls. It took eons, centuries for primitive writing
tools to evolve, first into the quill and then the humble pen. Enter
the 21st century. We are at the pinnacle of technological revolution.
We fork out big money for the convenience of having a palm pilot
and a handy stylus. After thousands and thousands of years of painstakingly
perfecting our writing tools, we have gone back to the tablet and
the stick. Some things never change.
